Jeanne Le Franc of Cambrai (who was noted for her personal beauty and great religious fervour and strictness), John’s mother, was destined to die early in life, but his father Gérard Cauvin, an ambitious man, secured him the best educational advantages possible for the time and circumstances. It was planned that the young Jean would enter the church as a priest.

However, in the good purpose and providence of God, John Calvin was converted.
