Bread and Wine People
Susan Sayers
Week by week all over the world the Christian community gathers to worship God and share in Communion. Increasingly parishes are wanting to include their committed, baptised children in this regular feeding, and there is widespread recognition that some kind of training is an essential part of this.

This presents a wonderful opportunity to think seriously about how any of us are deepening our faith, whatever our age, and whether, rather than a one-off course, we should be looking at ensuring that our parishes are providing on-going spiritual nurture for all ages. Baptised children could then come naturally to receive Communion at whatever age was considered suitable, since they would already be part of the on-going parish programme.

Bread and Wine People is a shared journey of discovery for the whole community of faith. For each of the three years of the Common Worship Lectionary there are four parish teaching Eucharists and one shared teaching meal. The three yearly meals are a Passover celebration, a fellowship meal, and an Emmaus meal. The teaching Eucharists are spread throughout the year and are designed to help deepen a sense of community in the parish.

There are times for separate learning with photocopiable worksheets provided for pre-schoolers, children, young people and adults, but it is a crucial part of the teaching that each group contributes to the learning of the whole, and detailed orders of service involve all ages in all parts of the service.
