Bunyan was a simple maker of kettles who received little education. However, he penned the most successful allegory ever written in the striking bluntness of untutored prose.
He lost his first wife and was imprisoned for twelve years for his compelling
but unlicensed
preaching. Nevertheless, his preaching about the gravity of sin, salvation by grace, the cost of discipleship and perseverance lives on in the signs and symbols of 'The Pilgrim's Progress'.
John Bunyan was a well-known preacher and minister to an Independent Congregation. His novel 'The Pilgrim's Progress' was an instant hit upon publication in 1678 and he wrote a further 40 books.
