A Celebration of Banners
WOOD/NUNNERLEY

From its title, you might assume that this book is only aimed at those who enjoy working with fabrics, and have an eye for design in a Christian setting. Not so. Tucked away inside the front cover is a modest note from its authors: ‘A Celebration of Banners is for anyone interested in the use of art forms to express the Christian faith’.

Despite my not being a banner-maker, or indeed a competent needlewoman, I have found the book to be a delight to the eye and mind. It is packed with photographs of banners created by Christian communities all over the world, illustrating how different people have chosen to express what they wish to say about their faith. Each illustration is accompanied by a personal story explaining how the inspiration for the banner came about, and - just as importantly – how the banner was actually constructed.

The pictures can be used as a means to prayer and contemplation, or they can inspire a much more practical means of expression – actually making a banner, either by oneself, or, more commonly, as a group. For the banner-maker there is a wealth of illustrations to whet ones appetite, coupled with simple explanations of the ‘how to’ aspects. I was heartened to see some illustrations of wonderful banners made by groups of children – these look just as effective as those made by adults using more sophisticated techniques. Interspersed through the book are one-page topics to enhance one’s understanding – for example, ‘Steps to Making a Banner’ and ‘The Meaning of Colour’.

This is a book to be enjoyed, reflected upon, and often returned to – it will inspire you, and perhaps get you working on a banner too!
