Quoting Martin Buber's dictum that 'there is nothing that so masks the face of God as religion', Williams moves beyond traditional theological language to outline a new view which does not contradict Christian orthodoxy - it moves beyond it. He is doubtful about a personal relationship between God and man in Christ, in the usual sense, but articulates an epistemology of un-knowing as the most profound way of experiencing God.
