SCM Studyguide to Moral Theology
Edward Dowler
The SCM Studyguide to Moral Theology is a short introduction to Christian morality. It begins with a discussion of the importance of the Bible for Christians in moral reflection, and looks at both conservative and liberal approaches to the use of the Bible in ethics, with the strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches discussed. It goes on to look at the role of natural law in Christian moral thinking, providing the historical background, definitions of natural law and giving examples of the way that natural law theories can be used in practice, and discussing the various criticisms of natural law ethics as well as the advantages. The book continues with a look at the meaning of Virtue within Christian ethics, taking an historical perspective and examining Virtue in the work of Aristotle and Aquinas, before exploring more recent developments in Virtue ethics particularly in the work of Stanley Hauerwas. The fourth section looks at the Biblical background to our understanding of conscience and the differing ways in which conscience has been understood in the Christian tradition and the final chapter looks at the importance of love in all Christian moral thinking. It examines Augustine’s understanding of the way that loves are ‘ordered’ and discusses the challenges of situation ethics. Throughout each chapter is structured around looking at key biblical sources and at the Christian moral traditions, and aims to provide the reader with a positive conclusion to the ethical questions raised.
