Authentic Church: Thessalonians
Jackman, David
The letters to the church in Thessalonica are regarded as the first letters written by Paul and therefore are the oldest accounts of life in a New Testament church. Paul and his colleagues had taken the gospel to Thessalonica where their evangelism had been blessed by God in the creation of a thriving church. Yet Paul and his friends were forced to leave the city because of opposition, primarily from the Jews, and they were concerned about how the church would continue. Paul wrote this letter upon discovering that the church was thriving and that to such an extent that their witness was known all over Greece.

In this book David Jackman considers several important aspects of life in that prosperous church. He highlights evangelism, prayer, leadership and the use of spiritual gifts. Although the church was thriving, it faced two problems - one was a misunderstanding connected to the Second Coming of Jesus and Paul gives clear teaching on this matter, particularly on the role of the anti-Christ and also what will happen on the day Jesus returns. The other problem concerns some believers who refused to work for their living and Paul highlights the bad witness such conduct is. David Jackman considers both these problems in some detail, applying them to modern situations.
