Exodus 20 - Ten Films: Ten Commandments Lesson Pack (DVD)
Alison E Cannon
EXODUS 20 is a resource for teachers of RE (RME) working with students aged 11–14. It also includes much material suitable for teaching Citizenship and PSHE (PSD) to this age-group. The resource consists of ten short films (each between 5 and 10 minutes long) which were written and acted by school children of varying ages in Sunderland and County Durham. Each film takes one of the Ten Commandments as its theme and presents an interpretation of the Commandment relevant to the lives of young people today. The films are of a high quality and raise many thought-provoking issues which are sure to stimulate discussion and learning. EXODUS 20 also includes the original 65 minute feature film, the Making of… documentary and a bonus video clip of Rob Lacey (author of The Word On The Street, formerly known as the street bible) performing the Ten Commandments on a hilltop. Each film also comes with accompanying teaching materials: - background issues to help teachers understand the Commandment and teach the material sensitively. - questions to promote discussion, both specifically about the storyline of the film and more generally about issues arising from it. - a“starter” lesson plan for RE, including differentiation for more and less able students. - ideas for homework activities which often lead into a subsequent lesson. - a range of further suggestions from which a follow-up lesson may be formed. These are classified under Debate/Media, Art/Craft, Music/Poetry and Dance/Drama to provide easy choice of type of activity required. - an assessment page in a booklet which can be produced by the teacher to record the lessons taught and the students’ response. - suggestions for how some of the activities could form the basis for Collective Worship (Assemblies/Religious Observance). There is also an introductory lesson on the Ten Commandments which we recommend is taught before any of the films are used in an RE (RME) context. The films may then be used in any order.
