God Talk
Ruth A Tucker
Usually God's silence is interpreted as a negative sign, but to Tucker, it is neither good nor bad. It just is. She celebrates it in concert with primarily contemporary, mostly mainline Protestant and Catholic thinkers, including C. S. Lewis and Thomas Merton. She discusses the voice of God as perceived in the public realm as well as the church, and she examines what scripture says about the silence of God. Later chapters address such difficult topics as anger, loss, and absence. Tucker also describes methods of listening to God, such as prayer, and, most poignantly, the silence of God in the story of the Crucifixion and the utter abandonment that it evokes. Ultimately in this very personal book--essentially a thoughtful interior conversation--Tucker attempts to answer the questions, Who is God? and How does God relate to us? In affirming God's silence, she acknowledges the mystery of faith and belief.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2006, American Library Association.)
